I am updating an old picture book app on Google Play after a couple of years. It looks like my new version means dropping support for 588 device types. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Or just inevitable?

I think it’s inevitable. It means users on these devices can’t get an update of the app. It’s probably all the devices that are running Android versions earlier than 5.0.
Did you check how many of your users are even on these older Android version?
